General Overview of Logistics & Supply Chain Management

Logistics refers to the process of moving and storing goods and products. It refers to the system in place for the transportation of goods in the supply chain. On the other hand, Supply Chain Management deals with how goods and services are produced from raw materials and how they are transported and distributed from producer to consumer. They connect producers, transportation systems, warehouses, retailers, etc.  Now, logistics and supply chain management are related because supply chain management focuses on sourcing raw materials to produce goods. In contrast, logistics is employed to transport these finished goods to consumers.

When I used to hear about the challenges of delayed clearing of goods at the Apapa Wharf – one of the busiest ports in Nigeria it never made any sense. I thought an establishment of that nature would have up to date and cutting edge logistics and supply chain management processes and technology to enable them compete effectively in an ever competitive global economy. However, when I started my small scale logistics business for last mile delivery of goods to end users, I had first hand experience of some of the challenges of managing logistics and supply chains. I constantly dealt with the challenges of riders, tracking of multiple goods in transit due to software problems and warehousing. In the course of researching for solutions to solve the problems I was dealing with in my business, logistic and supply chain management was a common denominator in my search for answers. After taking a look at some of the course modules, I knew I needed to equip myself with the necessary education in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

I was truly inspired by the Logistic and Supply Chain Management course module of Cranfield University, one of the top universities in the United Kingdom and in the world. The module was comprehensive and it addressed most of the problem areas I have been experiencing in my business like physical network design, warehousing amongst others. My academic background and work experience makes this course well suited for me. In 2006, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and I also have a Masters of Arts degree in International Economics and Trade. Having managed my own trading and logistics business, I am confident studying this course is a step in the right direction.

Recently I concluded the Google data analytics program on Coursera and could relate to how analytics technique for supply chain management can be a game changer in making managerial decisions. I have also completed other data analytic courses in Excel, Tableau, SQL and R programming language. I now understand how logistics and supply chain management plays a great role in complex organisations and the opportunity it presents in Nigeria

Logistics and Supply Chain Management is still relatively new in Nigerian Universities and some of the organisations implementing the processes are faced with inefficiencies. This is one of the major reasons I have decided to study the course overseas. I am applying to your university because I believe that the United Kingdom and Cranfield University in particular have advanced Logistics and Supply Chain Management modules, processes and industries that are implementing most of these techniques.

And it is a course focused on how businesses can organize the production and distribution of goods and services.  It is a one-year full-time course, requiring UK students to pay a tuition fee of £14,000, while international students must pay £24,000.

Cranfield University:

Cranfield University was established in 1946 and is a prestigious university in the United Kingdom. The Logistics and Supply Chain Management Master’s degree course at Cranfield University is ranked 2nd in the UK and 11th worldwide.  In this program, one would be exposed to in-depth knowledge about supply chain strategy and knowledge, supply chain operations, etc. It is a practical course that covers 60% coursework and 40% individual projects. It is a full-time program that spans one year. And UK students are to pay a tuition fee of £13,400, while international students are to pay £25,250.

Lund University is one of the oldest Northern Europe universities located in Sweden and was established in 1966.
